In the opening address to the student body at the Selskar College Award Ceremony, Acting Principal John Connolly noted that, due to the significant impact of Covid-19, this was the first year of celebrations for these students with parents, grandparents and guardians present.

Mr Connolly thanked the students for their resilience and adaptability and said they had exhibited "incredible integrity and tenacity" over the past couple of years and had dealt with the issues presented by the pandemic with "admirable courage and strength".

"Our Leaving Certificate students have had a very difficult couple of years but have overcome all the challenges they have faced and been a credit to the school throughout," said Acting Deputy Principal Gillian FitzMaurice O’Brien.

Speaking in the wake of Selskar's annual awards ceremony, she said all those who had received prizes were fully-deserving of recognition.

"In particular the staff would like to commend and acknowledge all students who have excelled and engaged in all aspects of college life academically, on work experience and in the sporting arena.

"We would like also to pay tribute to our junior cycle students who marked three years of achievement at the school and received their JCSP (Junior Cert School Programme) awards and their JCSP profiles, a record of their achievements over the past three years covering both academic subjects and cross curricular activities.”

Helping the students celebrate and in attendance at the awards was Mairead Stafford of Ballyelland Pottery who has worked with co-ordinator Mari Prendergast and students to complete a mural on climate change. Students were praised for their dedication, wished well in their examinations and urged to “follow their dreams and strive to reach their full potential”.
