A man aged in his 60s was airlifted from rural Wexford to University Hospital Waterford on Tuesday afternoon, after a “substantial fall” while working on a nearby construction site.
The HSE’s Aeromed01 air ambulance was tasked to the scene at Piercestown, Co Wexford just before noon on Tuesday. An ambulance crew was also in attendance at the scene, but the decision was taken to transport the patient, who is reportedly local, to Waterford by air rather than road.
Despite the incident being described as a serious fall, the man’s injuries are understood not to be life threatening, however, he was in need of urgent treatment.
Although it’s understood that University Hospital Waterford would be the preferred destination for a call of this nature, the decision to immediately airlift the man outside of the county was no doubt aided by the complete absence of an Emergency Department at Wexford General Hospital, following the fire which ripped through part of the building exactly a week beforehand, resulting in the complete closure of A&E.
