In January of this year the government announced a recognition payment of €1,000 for frontline health and ambulance workers with “an equivalent payment” provided for relevant staff in private sector nursing homes and hospices that were affected by Covid-19.

Announcing the payment, Tánaiste Leo Varadkar said it was the government’s way of recognising healthcare workers efforts “in dangerous and challenging conditions during the pandemic, and for the thousands of lives saved as a result of their efforts."
