There is widespread anger in Enniscorthy over incidents of vandalism and theft that occurred in St Mary’s Cemetery in recent days.

A plaque that was stuck to the Calvary cross, which is a focal point of the cemetery, was removed and stolen sometime within the last fortnight and it has caused a lot of anger locally.

Robbie Doran acts as a part-time caretaker in the cemetery and the matter was brought to his attention by a number of people who were very upset about the matter.

"It was stuck to the Calvary statue and it had to be ripped off it,” Robbie said.

"This was something that was put on by the people and it was taken off of it in the last week or so and people are very upset about it,” he said.

A lot of people on the Ross Road, in particular, donated to get the plaque on the cross and, in addition to insulting the relatives of loved one buried in the cemetery, Robbie said what happened is not fair on the people who helped get it placed on the statue.

“I want it returned and so do many other people," he said.

“People are very angry over it and it’s not right,” he added. It’s believed the matter has also been reported to the gardaí.
