Everyone’s career path is different, there are no pre-determined routes, no walkways marked out in advance. One must take their own journey, make their own way and hope that, come the day of reckoning, they are happy with their lot. Pat Murphy’s career path has been more different than most, his journey taking him somewhere that, as the 1980s came to a close, seemed wholly unlikely.

Born in Kerlogue, Pat left school before completing his Leaving Cert and began an apprenticeship as a painter and decorator. After qualifying he started his own business, met his wife, had children and seemed destined for a long and fulfilling life in his home county. Then the recession hit.
