The anticipated sea of green enveloped Wexford quay today as the annual St Patrick’s Day parade took to the streets in all its splendour.
The day’s festivities began traditional blessing of the shmrock in Bride Street Church at 9 a.m. and from that point on the excitement was palpable around town as smiling kids, decked out in green, began to gather on Trinity Street to take part.
Meanwhile, the usual crowds took up their viewing positions right down the quay.
An array of colourful and creative floats also took part and St Patrick’s Day was a double celebration for the participating local members of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann, still buzzing from the news that Wexford will be hosting Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann next year.
There were some weird, wonderful and creative entries and it was a real community celebration. This year sees the return of prize-giving for the best entries to the parade and the winners are due to be announced tomorrow (Saturday) at Macken’s pub at 7 p.m.
