Renovating Pondfields houses cheaper than building afresh

The cost of renovating two houses being renovated in Pondfields in New Ross is cheaper than knocking them and building afresh, Cllr Michael Sheehan was told at the municipal council meeting.

Cllr Sheehan said the two houses are gone out to tender.

“The price of the tender is quite extraordinary. It’s absolutely immoral that we are going to be ploughing that much money into houses. It’ll be this time next year before they come on stream.”

Housing officer Martina Donoghue said: “But at the end of that time we will have two good houses for New Ross families. If we were to replace them it would cost much more.”
