Gorey’s night-time economy could be extremely valuable for the town, according to Cllr Joe Sullivan, who proposed several ideas aimed at encouraging people to visit in the evenings.

Pedestrianising the main street from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. and using low level music are some of the ideas he posed, saying that they could turn the main street into a very attractive place.

He said that it could prove particularly attractive for holidaymakers in the area.

Cllr Diarmuid Devereux said that while the idea had been proposed before, it was difficult to get buy-in from the business community.

“A number of years ago, Love Gorey tried this, but we could get no traction from the business community,” he said, adding that the staying open late in the evenings would escalate costs ‘dramatically’ for businesses.

“We did try it and it never got legs.”
