A recent sitting of Gorey District Court in County Wexford heard how a motorist was driving a vehicle for which his licence didn’t cover him, when his case went before it.

Harley Dean Dunne, 14 Redmond Street, Enniscorthy, was charged with having no insurance or driving licence at the N30, Clonroche, on February 17, 2023.

Garda Liam Marshall gave evidence in the case to Judge John Cheatle and said that when he stopped the defendant there was no valid disc displayed on the windscreen.

The garda said enquiries in relation to the defendant’s driving licence revealed he wasn’t covered to drive the vehicle he was in at the time.

A barrister representing the accused in court told the judge: “He does hold a licence but not for the category of vehicle, and is insured.”

"He is a 30-year-old horse trainer and jockey and his usual driver never showed up for work,” said the barrister.

The court heard that on the date in question a pre-arranged sale of horses was to take place and “pressure” was placed on the accused to drive the vehicle.

The judge imposed a fine of €350 on the no insurance matter, and took into account the no licence charge.
