A defendant was given a chance to make a donation to the court poor box when his case went before a recent sitting of Gorey District Court.

Shane Troope, 18 Sugarhouse Lane, New Ross, is charged with possession of drugs at Glen Richards Woods, Courtown, on March 26, 2018.

Garda Jacinta Gordon told Judge Kevin Staunton that on the date mentioned she spoke to two males at the stated location, one of whom was the defendant who was found with a small amount of cannabis in his possession. The court heard the street value of the drugs was €20.

The defendant’s barrister pointed out to the judge the defendant had no previous convictions and that the incident had occurred four years ago.

Judge Staunton was told the accused accepted responsibility for the matter and was going through “a bad time on the day” of the alleged offence. The judge put the matter back to May 18, to give the defendant time to pay €200 to the court poor box and said if that’s done the matter will be struck out.
