Man accused of assaulting victim with a wooden stake in Ballycullane

A man charged with allegedly attacking someone in Ballycullane with a wooden stake has seen his case adjourned to the new year.

Richard O’Keeffe (31) of Somers Way, Ballycullane, was before Wexford District Court on Tuesday charged with assaulting Stephen Jansen Van Vuuren causing him harm. He is further charged with producing a wooden stake in the course of a dispute and causing €45 in damage to trees.

Sgt Gary Raynor told the court the accused damaged a number of trees belonging to the injured party and when confronted by Mr Van Vuuren, O’Keeffe took a wooden stake that was propping up a tree and assaulted Mr Van Vuuren with it. 

His glasses were broken in the incident and he sustained injuries to his face and elsewhere, Sgt Raynor said.

Supporting medical evidence to the assault accusation was handed to the judge.

Judge Máire Conneely adjourned the case into the January 11 court sitting, when fresh charges are expected to be brought against O’Keeffe.
