TODAY, Wedneday, May 25, is being celebrated as Africa Day across the county with events taking place in a number of locations to mark the occasion.

The events are being organised by Wexford County Council and FDYS to celebrate African cultures in acknowledgement of the African community living in the Model County.

Events will take place in Wexford Town, Enniscorthy, New Ross and Bridgetown and a spokesperson for the local authority said “community development in these areas will be reflected through face to face and digital events, centred around celebrating Africa Day in an integrated way”.

“Partner organisations will promote and support the engagement with the community,” she said.

“A variety of welcoming and cross-community engagement events will celebrate what ‘Ireland’ means today,” she added.

Africa Day celebrates the richness of African cultures and the contribution of people of African descent to Irish life.

The national celebrations are organised by Irish Aid at the Department of Foreign Affairs in partnership with African embassies in Ireland and local authorities around the country.

Commenting on the Wexford aspect of the day, Kieran Donohoe, Chief Executive Officer of FDYS, said: “This is an ideal opportunity to acknowledge the contribution African Cultures are making across County Wexford. We are proud of the range of activities planned.”

Nationally, this year will see Ireland’s largest-ever Africa Day programme with in-person events returning for the first time since 2019.
