€350k road resurfacing work set to begin around Wexford

The Department of Transport has given the Borough Council a grant of €349,200 for road improvements this year.

Borough Engineer Sinead Casey told last week's meeting that re-surfacing will be carried out at Tincone Lane, Rowe Street, Pembrokestown, Coolballow Road, Old Hospital Road, St. Aidan's, Kennedy Park, William Street, Common Quay, Hill Street roundabout and Summerhill roundabout.

In addition, safety improvement work will be done at the Waterloo Road junction and the junction of Barrack Street/Parnell Street/Lambert Place, using a separate Government allocation.

Wexford County Council has also been allocated €30,000 for new lighting at traffic islands on the Newtown Road.

Cllr. David Hynes, who lives in Davitt Road, highlighted ongoing dangers at the Waterloo Road and Summerhill roundabout junctions, where motorists are failing to stop.

The Borough Engineer said the priority given to motorists coming from Davitt Road North can be changed.

The current arrangement was put in place because the fire station was formerly located in the area.

She said the line markings can be altered to give precedence to cars emerging from Waterloo Road.

Cllr. Anthony Kelly said traffic calming is urgently needed at Whiterock View where some motorists are treating the road like a 'race track'.

Cllr. Padge Reck called for a full ramp to slow down traffic at Mulgannon junction instead of the existing partial ramp.

'Cars are driving over it as if it didn't exist,' he said.
