THE biggest celebration of traditional Irish music and culture in the world is set to descend on Wexford town with Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann to take to the streets from August 4 to 11, 2024.
While every street and laneway will be filled with the very finest traditional music, the official events and competitions are slated to take place in 18 different venues across town.
The biggest of the venues is one that does not yet exist. A large “dome" type venue will be specially constructed on Wexford Quay for the Fleadh, carrying a capacity of 1,800 to 2,000 people.
Schools across the town will also be used for performances and competition. The CBS Primary and Secondary will provide 30 rooms, a 500 capacity hall and a 150 capacity hall.
The Presentation has 30 rooms, a 400 capacity concert hall and 500 capacity hall. The Loreto can offer 30 rooms and a 500 capacity hall; Lady of Fatima 9 rooms and a hall with capacity for 50 and Gaelscoil Charman with 8 rooms and a hall with capacity for 80 people.
In terms of other venues The National Opera House will naturally play a big part with capacity for 750 and 150, while Clonard Community Centre (500), St Joseph's Community Centre (1,100), Clayton Whites Hotel (600), The Riverbank House Hotel (500), Talbot Hotel (600), The Street at Wexford County Council (500), The Quays, the Cinema Car Park, Wexford Park, Bride Street and Rowe Street Churches (600 each) and St Iberius Church (170) are all ready to be used.
