Grandfather and grandson, Jamesie Murphy from Tullogher, Rosbercon, and Conor Kearney from Killenard, Co Laois, were reunited on the field of play, at Chadwick Park in Wexford on May 3, making for a special moment for the family.

There is an age difference of 69 years – and a 53-year difference playing on the same turf – but time didn’t dull the enthusiasm for the game for Murphy, deepening it instead.

Kearney played in midfield for the 2nd half and scored a point on the grounds where his grandfather refereed the 1970 Wexford Hurling Final –which saw Buffer’s Alley take on Shamrocks of Enniscorthy.

Murphy was delighted to be back on the same pitch 53 years later to see his grandson score a pint in the match, which saw Wexford win 6-10 to 0-9.
