County Final

It is hard to explain why Tullogher-Rosbercon junior hurlers ended up losing to Mooncoin by 3-19 to 3-11 in the Kilkenny final. They made a blistering start and were seven points clear after only a quarter of an hours play.

Then things happened which had a definite bearing on the final outcome of the match. They started firing wides both from frees and play and gradually let Mooncoin back into the game. But perhaps the biggest game-changer of all was the outright cynical challenge on Walter Walsh which even neutrals agreed deserved a straight red card. Instead, referee, Seán Cleere, took no action and with their star performer, ‘Big Walter’ now a virtual passenger due to his injury, the game slipped away from Tullogher, even though they still had a goal lead at half-time. Mooncoin were the better team in the second half and went on to win by eight points in the end.

Late Fr Michael Norton
