Tintern Lotto

There was no jackpot winner last week when the numbers drawn were 1, 6, 7 and 14. The one match three winner was Peadar Butler of Campile. This week’s jackpot stands at €5,450.

The month of May has been traditionally dedicated to devotion to Our Lady. This year a group of parishioners have decided to recite The Rosary each evening at the grotto outside the church in Gusserane at 8pm. There is an open invitation and encouragement for all to attend.

Fun Walk

Gusserane Parent’s Association are holding a 3K fun run/walk on 12th June at 11am.

All monies raised will go towards buying resources for the school. Sponsorship cards are available at the school and donations are welcome on the day. Parking will be at Gusserane GAA pitch. All are welcome to come along.

GAA action

Well done to the Intermediate Gusserane hurlers who had a hard earned win over Blackwater in the All County League in Tom Somers Park on Sunday last.

The Junior B hurlers put in another spirited performance in the group stage of the Ross District championship but just fell short to Geraldine O’Hanrahans. They now wait to see who they get in the quarter finals.

Line Dance Classes

Come along to Old School Hall, Cushinstown every Wednesday morning at 10.30am and learn all the latest line dance moves and be ready for Garth Brooks.

Line dancing is very enjoyable - it keeps you fit, keeps blood pressure down and of course is a great way to lose weight. So if you want to get fit give Sarah a ring on 087 9792483 or just come along.


GAA news

The Junior B hurlers kept up their unbeaten run after a hard earned 0-17 to 2-9 win away to St. James on Fri. They now top the group and will have a home quarter final v Gusserane.

The Intermediate A team travelled to Cushinstown for Round 5 of the league on Sun. After a fine first half they led 0-14 to 0-4 but had to withstand a Cushinstown second half comeback before winning 0-18 to 1-13.

Conor Foley played in an uncustomary full back position on the Wexford Under 20 hurling team which lost by a point to Kilkenny in the Leinster Final.

The Intermediate footballers, who have already qualified for the League final play their final game away to Ballyhogue on Friday at 8pm. The second and thirdrd Club and County draws will be held on Wednesday 25th. A ticket for these 2 draws costs €30 and are available from Committee members.

Coiste na nOg

Results; Under 13 hurlers beat Askamore 3-8 to 0-5.

Fixtures; Thurs 19th Under 15 Hurling at home to Craanford at 7.15. Fri. 20th Under 11 hurling in Glynn at 7pm. Mon. 23rd Under 17 Football semi final at home to Marshalstown at 7.30. Tues 24th Under 13 Football Div. 3 in Adamstown at 7.15 and Div. 5 in Maudlintown at 7.15.

Rackard League

The Scoil Mhuire hurling team beat Barntown 5-5 to 1-0 and Cushinstown 2-7 to 0-6 in Roinn A , while the girls Camogie team beat Cushinstown 3-6 to 2-0.

Exam Mass

A Mass for those sitting the Junior & Leaving Certificate Exams in June will take place in Ballykelly Church on Saturday 4th June at 6pm. All students and their families are welcome to attend. There will be light refreshments in Ballykelly hall afterwards for the students and their families.

Rally Weekend

The Parish Council Sportsground committee and the Development committee would like to thank everyone in Newbawn who gave up their time to help out at the weekend–people who made sandwiches, confectionery and gave donations. It was real community spirit. All proceeds went towards the Development committee for the running of the Hall for the next year. The Development committee are extremely grateful for the help received.

Birthday wishes

Birthday wishes to Fr. Jimmy who celebrated his birthday last week. We continue to wish him a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing him back in Newbawn as soon as possible.

Anniversary Masses

Anyone wishing to book an anniversary mass, christening, etc. please call into the sacristy after mass on Sunday where a member of the Parish Council will facilitate same.

First Holy Communion

We wish the children of the Sacred Heart School Newbawn every blessing when they make their First Holy Communion on Saturday 21st May.

Rosary at the Grotto

The rosary and other prayers are being recited at the grotto adjacent to Newbawn Church every Tuesday and Thursday evening at 7pm for the month of May. Hymns are also being sung. Everyone is welcome to come along and join in.

Parish Draw

The winners of the latest draw, which took place recently, are: 1st prize of €300 Margaret Colfer of Rosegarland, Foulksmills; 2nd prize of €200 Paul Carroll of Co. Meath; 3rd prize of €100 Seamus and Trish Banville of Carrigadaggan. Proceeds of the draw go towards parish funding. The next draw takes place on the last Sunday of May.

Split the Pot

Meanwhile the Split the Pot draw takes place every second Thursday. Proceeds from this is divided between the local community sports ground and the upkeep of the parish. Last Thursday’s winner of €240 was Catherine Wall of Carrigbyrne.


Raheen Day Centre

Raheen Day Centre offers older members of our community a social outlet and a place to meet in friendly and warm surroundings.

Marie Keating Mobile Unit

Mark this date in your diary. The mobile information unit will be here at SWWFRC in Ramsgrange on May 23 between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.

The Foundation aims to raise awareness of the importance of a healthy lifestyle and early detection in reducing cancer risk. The service is offered free of charge to the general public and both men and women are welcome.

A Marie Keating Foundation nurses can talk to people in a private area on board the unit about any concerns that they may have about cancer, either for themselves or for someone else such as a family member or friend. The unit is stocked with take-home information leaflets and packs on the various cancers.

Parent and Toddler Group

Our Parent and toddler group meets every Tuesday here at SWWFRC from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. This group is a great place for parents with small children to meet up and have a chat and for the kiddies to try all kinds of activities All are welcome and for further information please call Lorraine at 051 389418 or email community@swwfrc.ie.

Fusion Youth Café

Fusion Café at South West Wexford Family Resource Centre continues to open for fifth and sixth class primary school pupils on Mondays and Tuesdays, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., and for Secondary School students on Wednesdays, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

This is your chance to make friends, play games and have fun. We are also a summer Camp and some activity workshops in July so keep an eye on our Facebook page for the latest updates. We have a small tuckshop with a limited variety of snacks available and for a small charge of €2, secondary school pupils can be dropped home afterwards. Free Book Library

Lots of lovely books in our free book library at the moment so why not drop in to the foyer here at SWWFRC and choose something interesting.

We offer books free to take away and at present are looking for donations for clean or nearly new children’s and teenager’s books.

Free Admission to OPW sites

Don’t forget that on the first Wednesday of every month the OPW offers free entry to many of their sites. These include Tintern Abbey and John F Kennedy Arboretum. So for any individuals or families looking for a free day out, here’s your chance. Next free Wednesday is Wednesday, June 1, so mark the date in your diary.

Duncannon Beach Market

The Beach Market will be back again this summer. It is planned to open every Sunday in June from 10.30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays during July and August from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., and on Sundays from 10.30 a.m. to 4 p.m. A limited number of spaces are available so contact Dawn at 085 8718936 or Sarah at 087 1386534 for more information.

St James’ GAA

The barn dance is back. It will be held on Saturday, June 4, at Nolan’s Clonsharragh. The band are ‘Playing on Empty’ and tickets can be bought on the night. Tickets €10.

Our senior football team lost to St Martin’s on Tuesday by 0-4.

Club lotto jackpot is €14,000 with a match-three prize win or share €1,000 for next five draws. Draw takes place in Taghmon-Camross GAA Pitch purchase fund is going well and the purchase process is moving along nicely. A massive thanks to everyone who donated or have pledged a donation, the club greatly appreciates it.

Active Retirement Group

This month we will be having a mystery tour with a competition for participants to guess where we are going. The winner goes free. This will take place on May 25 and will cost members €20 (non-members €25). This includes the coach, tea and scones at a refreshment stop and any entrance fees etc. please check with Kelly if there are any places left as we had a great uptake at the May meeting. We will be leaving Ramsgrange at 10.15 a.m., with pick-ups in Campile at 10.30 and New Ross at 10.50. This trip replaces the usual monthly cinema visit.

There are still one or two places left on the holiday to Castlebar, from September 19 to 23 and we welcome new members and non-members to join us. If you do wish to join us on the holiday, names and deposits must be with Mary B before July 4 in order to secure your place. Please call Mary at 087 2073966 for more information on the holiday.

We have a planned a half day trip to Johnstown Castle and Kilmore Quay on June 22 Pick up arrangements will be notified later.

Don’t forget our regular days for swimming at Brandon House Hotel swimming pool on Mondays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to midday in the morning for the very good price of €5 per session. Members should make their own way there.

Our next meeting is on June 13 at 2 p.m. at the SWWFRC. We will have a solicitor to speak to us about the importance of making a will no matter how old you are and ensuring that someone knows where your instructions are recorded. We have all learned through Covid how suddenly the need for this could arise.
