Hooley in The Park

The weather held up and the crowds gathered for the inaugural Hooley in Tom Somers Park in Gusserane last Saturday night. The summer breeze carried the tunes of Joe Davitt and his band followed by Green Road all over the little village for the evening.

The music was preceded by the Clare versus Wexford hurling match on a huge screen. With ten minutes to go there was a great buzz around the place with the prospect of an All Ireland semi final spot looking to be on the cards. That didn’t materialise, as we all know, but it didn’t stop the huge crowd enjoying the music, dancing, bar, barbeque and teas.

The local GAA club deserve great credit for organising the event and the people of the parish and beyond are to be commended for supporting the cause. All proceeds go towards the running of the GAA club.

Well done to the Gusserane intermediate hurlers who won the District’s Foxe Cup competition for the first time in their history last Friday night. In an entertaining game against Horeswood, played in glorious conditions in Clongeen, they won out on a scoreline of 4-16 to 2-17.

The match will serve both teams well in their championship preparations. Gusserane are scheduled to play HWH Bunclody in their championship opener in Enniscorthy this coming Sunday.

Sacred Heart SVP Conference

The society of St Vincent de Paul (SVP) is one of the largest voluntary charitable organisations in Ireland. SVP members are volunteers who provide practical help and support to people who are struggling to manage for whatever reason. These volunteers form part of local SVP Conferences which aim to meet the needs of local communities.

In 2017, a local SVP Conference called the Sacred Heart Conference was established to provide support where possible to people in the Raheen, Newbawn and Adamstown area.

If you need help or support, you may contact the local Conference telephone at 087 9032375 or through the SVP website by visiting ‘Request help online – St Vincent de Paul’. A member of the local Conference will then contact you to discuss the help you need. Following consideration of your request and the resources available the SVP member will reply to your request as soon as possible.

All SVP requests are confidential, this means that any information given by the person seeking help will not be shared outside the SVP Conference without your permission. The Sacred Heart SVP Conference continues to provide help and support where needed, thanks to donations received and the support of the local community for our annual collection. If you are struggling to manage, the Sacred Heart Conference is here to listen and help.

Live Streaming of Mass

As we have returned to full capacity at Mass after two and a half years, there will no longer be live streaming.

The parish council and people from Newbawn and beyond would like to express their gratitude to Catriona O’Sullivan. It was thanks to her that we could participate in Mass from our church in our own homes. People from abroad could join with their loved ones especially for funerals when they were unable to travel due to the pandemic. It was all very much appreciated.

If anyone would like an anniversary Mass or otherwise streamed live, please contact any member of the parish council, and Catriona will be happy to oblige.

The annual patron will take place on Sunday, July 17. Mass at 11 a.m. will be for all the deceased in our graveyards. Further details at a later date.
