There was music, laughter and dancing on the streets of Gorey last weekend as the much-loved charity busk made its return to the town.

Musicians from across the country stopped by to play their part at the musical event which, this year, was in aid of Cancer Clinical Research Trust. According to one of the organisers of the event, Gerry Lennon, the event was a huge success.

“It was a fantastic day. We started on the street outside French’s at 2.30 p.m. and went on until 6 p.m. and then everyone went into the courtyard to continue playing. There was great talent,” he said.

“It is a well-known event in Gorey at this point. People were just delighted to see it back. A lot of people were saying that they never miss it, and one man travelled from Waterford for the day. The atmosphere was just fantastic!”

The Gorey Busk has been taking place in Gorey on the second Saturday in August for over 30 years.

This year, the organisers decided to dedicate the event to the Cancer Clinical Research Trust (CCRT) – a registered charity founded by Consultant Medical Oncologist, Professor John Crown. While donations are still being counted, the fundraiser raised ‘in excess of €6,000’.

The success of the Gorey event has been so great that it may mark the beginning of a National Busking Day, said Gerry.

"The charity are absolutely delighted to the extent we have made a suggestion to them that this might become a National Busking Day. Wouldn’t it be great if you could do it in Enniscorthy, Dungarvan, Dunmore East, wherever you are, so that everyone could join in?” said Gerry.

Whether or not the National Busking Day idea is realised, the Gorey Busk will continue to take place every year, he added.

Organisers of the Gorey Busk supported CCRT through the event 18 years ago in memory of Anne Burns, who sadly lost her life to cancer. This year, the day was a celebration for Marian Hogan who passed away last year and was a long time patient of Professor Crown.
