People from across the community came in their droves to a recent coffee morning in support of Margaret Bolger – a Gorey woman who is raising funds to receive mesh removal surgery in the USA.

The event, which took place at the Rock Community Hall, pulled in a total of €3,000 for Margaret’s procedure, bringing her total amount raised to date to €7,500. It brings Margaret one step closer to her €25,000 goal, and one step closer to a life free from the pain and complications caused by vaginal mesh.

“It was a great success. People were coming and going all day,” said Margaret. “It is all feeling so much more real now. It has been in my mind for so long but I haven’t been able to finance it. Now things are happening. I have the date for October 28, which is a good thing, because it is on everyone’s mind.”

Margaret had vaginal mesh inserted for prolapse in 2013 and said that her ‘life has been put on hold’ by the pain and many other physical complications she believes have occurred as a result of the procedure. Through her involvement with Mesh Ireland – a support group for women who have experienced medical complications caused by vaginal mesh – Margaret learned about the specialist clinic in St Louis, Missouri that offers full mesh removal treatment she cannot currently access in Ireland. She will visit this clinic to undergo the procedure this October.

There are several more fundraisers for Margaret in the pipeline, details of which will be announced soon. In the meantime, the sharing of her story has allowed Margaret to connect with many other women who feel they share the same issue.

"When it came to sharing my story at first, I was cringing about it being on the local paper because people know me. But now I feel proud of myself,” she said. “The more women we have coming forward with this complaint, the more pressure is going to be put on the government to do something about it. These women need to have their life back.”
