Creativity from across the community was in the spotlight as the Gorey Art Circle unveiled their 46th exhibition to the public at their recent grand opening.

A total of 65 paintings created by 26 of the group’s members have been put on display at the Market House for the highly-anticipated annual exhibition. Chairperson Margaret O' Morchoe and Councillor Andrew Bolger officially opened the exhibition and welcomed the first crowd of people who came to view the wide array of watercolour, oils, acrylics, mixed media and pastels.

According to Secretary of Gorey Art Circle, Siobhan Kenny, visitors have been coming through the doors to view the artwork every day since.

“There is a very large footfall. The signs are outside so people are noticing them and coming in to have a look around,” she said. "We are encouraging everyone to come in, have a look and support the local artists. It has been really good fun so far. Even the kids are coming in and having fun picking their favourite painting.”

Gorey Art Circle has raised money for a wide array of charities through their annual exhibition. This year, they decided to raise money for the Irish Red Cross Ukraine Appeal. Ten percent of each painting sale will go to the cause, while an on-site donation box is also available for those who wish to make a donation.

This year is the first time the Gorey Art Circle members have been able to hold an in-person exhibition since the onset of the pandemic. While they did hold an online event in 2020, Siobhan said it is wonderful to be able to hold an event in the community once again.

Gorey Art Circle is a group of people interested in active art through painting, drawing and ceramics. It has over 40 members and is in its 46th year running annual exhibitions in Gorey.

Gorey Art Circle’s Summer Exhibition in the Market House is open until Sunday, August 8. Members of the public are welcome to visit between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. on weekdays, and from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m. on Sundays.
