Collectively we have just had two challenging years in a row. Individually the story has been different. Some of us have been more severely pressured and others have found more positives in the midst of the storm. You know what you have experienced and how you are feeling now and about the year ahead.

By definition, stress is an ‘upset to your physical, mental and or emotional balance’.  Balance therefore, is the antidote to stress.  In times of change, uncertainty, challenge and increased stress, the need for balance is all the more.   Imbalance leads to burnout and health problems - both mentally and physically and even addiction and the absence of joy in the extreme.

When difficulties come in life, they can leave us bitter, better, broken or burned out.  Better means that you are stronger, more equipped to deal with future problems, and more skilled or stronger in some way.  When in balance, you feel complete in a way, and somehow you have found a way of neutralising stress and integrating tools to destress you into your daily life.

If 2021 has challenged you more than in healthy way, it may be helpful to step back and plan how to meaningfully and practically bring balance to your life, mind and body and spirit in 2022.   Balance is a feeling.  It is not a formula.  It is a feeling that your needs are being addressed and or worked on – that you have what you need – or at least that you can get it and that there is movement in all areas of your life that matter. It is not a formula.  It is not just 8 hours sleep and 2000 calories although certain lifestyle habits will naturally facilitate balance.  As we start the year it may be helpful to look at how ‘balanced’ you feel in your life,  Here are 3 things you can do.

Understand what balance feels like and looks like to you - mind body and spirit.

Understand  the relationship between balance, stress, work and life as it pertains to you.  COVID and remote working has blurred the lines for many.  The traditional approach to Work-life balance was focused on keeping your work and your personal life separate, but equal, whereas work-life integration is based on the belief that there is no distinction between the two and that both should coexist in harmony.  Some find it easier to blend the two. Some can easily check emails in the evening for 30 minutes after the working day is over. For others, that results in them being never off.  It is important that you have enough rest and recharge time each day and that you design your life such that overall you feel balanced.

Plan strategies and activities to boost balance in your life so you feel fulfilled and alive.  Look at exercise, sleep and what you eat to keep the body energised.  Look at your mindset and perspectives to assess your mental balance.  Being grounded, clear, positive and resourceful is ideal.  Heart and soul wise you want to feel loved, nourished, inspired and motivated.

2022 is just starting.  We cannot control much of what will happen but we can control how we show up in situations.  As the equation goes, Event + Response = Result.  When you are in balance you have the best chance of responding in the best way – to ensure the best result for you and those around you.
