Host families

There has been a long tradition of foreign students coming to Gorey every summer to improve their English. The youthful language student groups have become part of the buzz of the summer period in the sunny south east. There is a sharp upsurge in the numbers of Spanish students in particular, who are enrolling in summer camps in the Gorey area. North Wexford has become very popular among Spanish families who want to send their teenagers to Ireland for English language development.

The challenge in the Gorey area this year is to find a sufficient amount of host families. In addition to the income it generates, hosting a foreign student can open you up to the culture of another country, especially for young people who may wish to use the opportunity to improve the European language that they are studying at school. Experienced host families say they like the short duration of the three- to four-week summer camps, along with the full schedule of activities from Monday to Saturday which is arranged for the students. Families interested in hosting students this Summer can contact Mary at 087 6504379 for further details.

Lisa is hosting a darts exhibition fundraiser in the Golden Anchor pub in Castletown on Saturday, July 30.

Professional players Tony O’Shea and Andy Hamilton will be coming over from England for the event and there will be 26 challengers hoping to beat them.

Also on the night, one leg of darts will be won by someone in the crowd by winning on a spot the ball card, while one leg of darts will be auctioned. The winner will get to play a leg of darts and win the signed dart board. There will also be two raffles during the evening.

The organisers are seeking some businesses to sponsor the challengers and in return, the business will be advertised on the keepsake programme and by way of announcements during the evening. If anyone could donate a prize for the raffle, that would also be greatly appreciated.

The fundraiser is being organised in aid Our Lady’s Hospice and Care Services, Harold’s Cross in memory of Pamela. Call Lisa on 087 265 2595 if you are interested in supporting the event.
