Historical Society tour

Our proposed September 3 and 4 overnight tour to Athlone and Mayo has been cancelled for this year. We needed at least 40 members to proceed with the tour; but we have not got the numbers to proceed. If you expressed an interest, thanks for doing this. We will move the tour to September 2023 when things are more settled and Covid has gone away, hopefully. We may run a one-day tour in September; if we are, we will be in touch. Thanks to Peter for organising and doing up the tour agenda.

If you are interested in joining the society, please email northwexfordhistoricalsociety@gmail.com or call/text Peter on 087 9365000 by July 28. If you are not already a member of NWHS you will be required to join for insurance purposes (€15 single, €25 family). Tour will only proceed if sufficient numbers register an interest.

Gorey Choral Group

Gorey Choral group is a mixed voice choir that have performed in various venues, gatherings, events and competitions locally and further afield over the years.

The choir would love to reach out to get some new members for the start of the forthcoming year. The choir rehearse once a week, on Monday evenings.

We would love to welcome new members to our fun and exciting choir. There will be auditions taking place for all sections: soprano, alto, bass and tenor. No experience is necessary and there is no requirement to be able to read music. You won’t need to prepare a piece as the musical director will ask you to sing a well-known ‘Christmas carol’.

Those interested in auditioning can email goreychoralgroup@gmail.com or contact Monica on 0863485215.

Road safety concerns

A meeting of Coolgreany/Knockgreany took place last week. Twenty-three residents attended, with many expressing concerns about the speeding of vehicles coming in and out of the village. Garda have been issuing fines, but this is not going to stop a major accident or fatality happening in the future, was the general consensus.

It was felt that there needs to be the following put in place:

1. Larger speed signs/ flashing speed signs

2. A review of current speed limits, with 50km to begin a longer distance from the edge of the village at all roads coming into the village.

3. Painted speeds limits on the road itself

4. Footpaths stretching from village outwards, to ensure safety of all walking on the roads coming back and forth from the village

5. Speed bumps from 50 km signs that go right across the road

6. A path across the bridge with a right of way on one side.

7. Improvement on the path currently leading to the Doctor’s surgery at Knockgreany

Six people attending the meeting put themselves forward to form a committee that would meet to present data on number of cars etc., coming through the village, as well drawing up a proposal to be sent to the local Wexford County Council engineer which would outline all the changes proposed above in order to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all who are working, living and attending school etc. in the village.

The committee will call another meeting of all residents at a later point, when they are ready to submit their proposals to Wexford County Council.
