OULART & THE BALLAGH
Unveiling of Memorial
This year marks the 225th anniversary of the Insurrection of 1798 and of the first major battle of that campaign-the victory on Oulart Hill.
This Saturday 27th May, a Memorial to the United Irishmen will be unveiled at the car park, on Oulart Hill. Pike men and women as well as a Colour Party will attend, and some harpists, under Aileen Kennedy will provide music.
The event gets underway at 6pm and will conclude around 7pm. Oulart Hill Development Chairman, John Dempsey will welcome the attendance. Following the unveiling by local man, Peter O’Brien, (Monavullen) Brian O’Cléirigh will give a short talk on the significance of the Memorial. Deceased members of Oulart Pikemen will also be remembered on the evening.
Ms. Mary Farrell, MCC will lead the singing of “Boolavogue” and the National Anthem. Marching Pike people will lead the way down the Hill Lane to Oulart Community Centre where light refreshments will be served, followed by music and songs.
Everyone is invited and encouraged to attend this historical occasion as we remember with pride the men and women of 1798. There will be ample car parking in a field on top of the Hill. See Facebook for full itinerary.
The annual Patron and blessing of graves in Oulart will be held on the last Sunday in June (25th) while the Patron in The Ballagh will be held as usual on the first Sunday in July. Further details will be available closer to the dates.
The Community of Oulart Women’s Society continues to meet in Oulart Community Centre every second Tuesday night, at 8pm. The next meetings will be held on 1st June.
Meetings are always well attended and various topics are discussed and plans made for future activities. The members are very community orientated and undertake projects to enhance the local area.
Presently, plans are underway to have a mural painted on the high wall, on the short-cut to the graveyard. Last Saturday some members of the C.O.W.S. were busy applying undercoat to the wall that had kindly been power-washed by Eddie O’Dowd. The work will continue over the next few weeks and the finished product is much anticipated.
Since the formation of the C.O.W.S., two very successful Afternoon Teas have been held in Oulart Community Centre, where a Céad Míle Fáilte has been extended to everyone, to come together for tea/coffee and a chat and an opportunity to meet with people that you may not have seen for a while.
The next Afternoon Tea Party will be held on Friday 9th June, from 3pm until 5pm, and all members of the community are invited to attend. There is no charge and the members of C.O.W.S. will welcome you with open arms and serve tea/coffee and melt-in-the-mouth confectionary.
