The national Water Safety Week organised by Water Safety Ireland will take place next week. There are many resources and events which the public can avail of throughout the year from Water Safety Ireland.

While we have access to many fantastic open water spaces in Sligo, it is important to remember to be safe around water. Water Safety Week is a reminder of the importance of being safe around water.

Did you know that there is a free water safety programme for primary school children? Sligo Water Safety recently sent all primary schools in county Sligo, via the Sligo Education Centre, a free educational resource called PAWS (Primary Aquatics Water Safety). This water safety resource has been created by Water Safety Ireland. Children will be enjoying the waterways in Ireland increasingly over the coming months. Unfortunately, thirty children aged fourteen and under have drowned in Ireland in a 10-year period.

Thirty children is the equivalent of an entire classroom in many schools. By encouraging school children to be more conscious about water safety, this statistic can change.

PAWS outlines life-saving guidelines for children of every age and is available digitally to every school in the country. It teaches children how to be safe around water in homes, farms, pools, beaches and on our waterways. Every child can learn water safety skills in the classroom. The lessons can be delivered in just a few hours of class time. Lesson plans, activities, website links are all included to guide teachers with the delivery of the programme. Water Safety Ireland provides free certification for schools that teach the PAWS syllabus to their students. Schools can register by simply emailing paws@iws.ie outlining the number of certificates that they require and the school that they teach in. All PAWS certificates are completely free.

On the website, there are free classroom resources with beautiful illustrations, a wealth of tips and advice, interactive games and puzzles which have been created specifically for the different class age groups. The resources are available on the Water Safety Ireland website at watersafety.ie/primary-school.
