Rovers issue statement on online abuse

Sligo Rovers released a statement on its website and Facebook and Twitter accounts to condemn apparent online abuse directed at its players.

In the statement, from Club Chairman Joe Burns, it indicates that Sligo Rovers players have been targetted by people on social media lately.

It added: "Sligo Rovers would like to condemn the recent abuse which has been directed at the club's players on social media. "While all fans will have their opinions, and have the right to express those opinions, the aiming of personal abuse towards players can only have a negative impact on results."

The statement, released on Thursday, stressed that the team was having a difficult run at the moment and the disappointment is shared by people.

"All at the club are working hard to ensure that we improve our league position and bring us back to, our now accustomed position, of challenging for honours.

"On behalf of the club I would like to thank our fans for all the support which has been received so far this year and we hope to see all of our supporters get behind the team for the season ahead," the chairman added.

The team have had a busy few days recently, with two home games during the Easter bank-holiday weekend, with Bray in the League and Derry in the EA Cup.
