Champion wins National award
The Aldi Community Games awards took place in the Johnstown Estate on Saturday evening and The Sligo Champion won the 'best overall' category for its coverage and supplement of the Community Games throughout the year.
Margaret Bolton and Emma Gallagher from the Sligo Champion were on hand to collect the award from Tony O'Donoghue, RTE Sports presenter, who was MC for the event.
The Sligo Champion has been a proud supporter of the Community Games for many years and the newspaper has won awards in previous years for its coverage of the Games.
The awards were held in the beautiful setting of Johnstown Estate near Enfield with a large crowd of 300 people involved with the Community Games in attendance.
Among the Sligo Community Games representatives were Eileen Brennan, PRO, Noreen McDermott, Assistant PRO, Anne Kelly, Secretary, John Walsh Vice Chairman, Anthony Leonard, Development Officer, Michael Curley, Vice President, Christine Gillen, St Mary's Secretary, Tanya Kelly, National Games Committee and John McGetrick, President.
There were more awards won by Sligo too at the prestigious ceremony.
Katie Maher from St Mary's Community Games won the Adult Volunteer Award and she was presented with this by Jude Feehan, the National Games Secretary.
Rosses Point won the Best Area award, with Eileen Brennan proudly accepting an award for Mullinabreena, the Best Small Area winner.
There was 300 people at the event which celebrated another successful year both locally and nationally for the Community Games.
In Sligo, so many athletes, including World champion swimmer Mona McSharry credit the Games for introducing them to sport. Focus now turns to next year and another busy schedule for the Games.
