Sligo Community Games honoured three loyal servants at an Executive Meeting in the Glasshouse Hotel on Tuesday 24th May.
The Chairman, Brian McBride, led many tributes on the night to Ann Kelly who stepped down as County Secretary after 37 years. Brian described Ann as ‘an absolute lady, who was professional, diligent and a pleasure to work with’.
John McGettrick, who was responsible for asking Ann to take the job at a meeting in Carraroe all those years ago, paid a glowing tribute to his good friend describing her involvement with Community Games as ‘extraordinary’.
He described many of the qualities Ann had displayed over her long years of service to her own area, Riverstown, County Sligo and at National level, keeping people involved and sharing her expertise on many fronts down through the years.
Anthony Leonard said he had worked with Ann over the last 30 years and that even in tough times Ann had battled through, ensuring the spirit of Community Games was kept going, that rules were adhered to and all the children taking part were looked after ensuring they had a memorable experience at all levels of the games.
Margaret Bolton concluded the tributes saying there is no one like Ann, a true lady, a friend to all.
These sentiments received a round of applause from all who attended on the night.
Thankfully, Ann’s wealth of experience will not be lost as she will continue to be involved in her new role as Assistant Secretary.
Long serving PRO Eileen Brennan and Assistant PRO Noreen McDermott decided to step down from their positions on the committee.
Again, many tributes were paid with Margaret Bolton summing up the tremendous input both ladies had contributed to Sligo Community Games.
Margaret recalled her time as National PRO when they had won numerous awards at National level which was testimony to the reports, photos submitted and the amount of work they had completed behind the scenes.
Anthony Leonard told the meeting these ladies were always prepared, notebook in hand, results taken and relayed back to all media channels.
The welfare of the children taking priority at all times. The awards were no doubt recognition for all their hard work.
A presentation was made on the night to Ann Kelly, Eileen Brennan and Noreen McDermott.
