Sligo AC athletes on form

A squad of 20 under 12 and 13 juvenile Sligo AC athletes competed in the Connacht Indoor Track and Field Championships in Athlone recently. The athletes all had a successful weekend with the boys under 12 relay team placing 4th - missing out on 3rd position by 1/100 second. Sean McCabe took silver medals in 60m, long jump and high jump. Orna Murphy was Gold medalist in long jump and silver in sprint. There were Gold medals too for the Under 14 boys relay team - Hughie Doherty, Sean McCabe, Finn Campbell and Harry Graham.

The Senior and Master events took place on Day 2 of the Connacht Indoor Championships. The club had a number of members competing alongside some guests from outside the province. There were very strong performances from all who travelled to AIT.

In the women's 60m, Jane Byrne made a brilliant return to the track by winning gold in the Masters W35 in a time of 8:77. James Callaghan was first Connacht man in the M35 1500m with an impressive 4:28:79 finish. In the men's 3000m event, two Sligo AC athletes finished in the top 2 overall - Shane Hayes with another brilliant performance taking gold in the M35 and Mathew McMeekin finished 2nd overall in the event and 1st Senior taking home gold also.

Aaron Cadden came home with a double win, with 1st in both the Senior Men's 60m (7:19) and the 200m (22:85). Great running again by Leo Doherty who finsihed first in the Senior Men's 800m in an impressive time of 1:57:77.

Other Sligo AC successes came from Aoife Egan who competed in the senior/masters 3000m race and finished an excellent 8th overall and 3rd senior to cross the line in a time of 12:26:71 taking home bronze. There were excellent performances from the U17/U19 athletes, race walkers Ruth Monaghan and Ryan Roberts both took home gold in the U19 1500m walk. Ailbhe Morgan took home gold in the U19 1500m. Daragh Williams was first in the U19 800m in a time of 2:07:57 and a big well done to Shane O'Doherty who was 5th in the U19 1500m. Super running and congratulations to all.

Intervarsity Cross Country Championships; Congratulations to Sligo AC athletes Eavan McLoughlin and Eimear O'Connor who competed in the Intervarsity Cross Country Championships on Saturday held at St.Mary's College Galway. Impressive running again by these two girls in tough conditions. Eavan representing Trinity College finished 15th overall followed closely by Eimear of UCD in 18th position. Trinity College team placed 2nd followed by UCD in 3rd.

Sligo Champion
