Rock climbing club is growing

Rock climbing is a sport that's becoming increasingly popular in the county.

Sligo Climbing Club recently held their first open day of the season at Scalp na gCapaill in Cooney Ballisodare.

The day offered fantastic conditions for climbing with mild dry weather. The club organised two 'Intro to Climbing' sessions on the day, morning and afternoon slots.

Each slot was fully booked out and 18 people had the opportunity to experience a fantastic day at the crag, where they were given an introduction to basic skills and safety for rock climbing and took on at least three climbs each.

Sligo Climbing Club is currently involved in a Club Development Project with Mountaineering Ireland and Sligo Sport and Recreation Partnership.

Mountaineering Ireland's Climbing Officer and Membership Development Officer visited Sligo in December to meet with Sligo Climbing Club and SSRP to make plans for 2019.

The project will help develop the club's structure, governance, coach training and look at other opportunities to develop the strength of the club to build the sport of climbing in Sligo.

In February, members of Sligo Climbing Club attended Mountaineering Ireland's Fundamentals of Climbing training course in SUAS Climbing Centre in Limerick delivered by Dave Ayton.

This training improved the climbing knowledge and skills for coaching of those who attended, developing the capacity of the club to welcome new members.

Rock Climbing is a recreational social activity and the sport is exploding internationally as countries all over the world catch the climbing bug so there has never been a better time to get into this courageous and rewarding pastime.

One of the goals of Sligo Climbing Club is to develop an indoor climbing wall for club members in Sligo.

Lots of hard work is currently happening to make this a reality.

An indoor facility would really help develop climbing in Sligo and the club will be launching fundraising campaigns shortly to work towards this goal.

The club will be hosting more outdoor climbing open days during the year for those interested in taking up rock climbing as a recreational activity.
