Great year for Badminton

Another successful and enjoyable season in the Sligo Badminton Club came to an end recently in Sligo Tennis Club with the hosting of the Badminton Club Championships, sponsored by Bistro Bianconi.

This was a very successful year for the club, with a large number of new members joining including a number of novices who all seemed to thoroughly enjoy their first badminton season.

With over 45 players taking part in the Club Championships this was a very competitive event with some excellent badminton being played over the week.

It included Singles, Doubles and Mixed Doubles Sections for all levels.

In the Mixed C Section Ciaran McGirl and Avril Cryan were victorious against Roland Clear and Audrey Elliott while in the B section Conor Dunleavy and Francie Mahon won in a close two setter against PJ Tivnan and Kay Curley.

In the Men's Double C Section there was a 2 sets win for Ciaran McGirl and David Higgins over Roland Clear and Aidan Foley while in the B section the winners were Denis Daly and Suresh with Sean Gilmartin and Roman Liviau the runners up.

In the Ladies Doubles Rebeeca Harte and Audrey Elliott beat Rebecca Curley and Deirdre Reilly in the C section.

In the B Section Arlene Wilson and Caithlin Stenson defeated Niamh Deacy and Karolina Bernacka while in the A section Louise McGirl and Arlene Wilson got the better of Eimear Healy and Kay Curley.

In the Ladies Singles there were 2 set wins for Kay Curley against Arlene Wilson in the B section and Louise McGirl against Eimear Healy in the A section.

In the Men's Singles there were close wins for Ciaran McGirl against Aidan Foley in the C section and Denis Daly against Sean Gilmartin in the B section.

Elsewhere in the Men's Singles A Section Graeme Watt came out top in a tough three setter against Rakeesh Dontireddy. Other winners were Ciaran McGirl and Niamh Deacy for Novice of the Year, Arlene Wilson for most improved player with Marie Gallagher and Francie Mahon awarded Club Person of the Year.

In his presentation speech at the end, Badminton Captain PJ Tivnan thanked Pat Grimes of the Bistro Bianconni for his sponsorship and indeed all the other sponsors over the year. He also thanked John Dolan and Tom Higgins for their coaching with the Novices and Juniors respectively. Finally he also thanked everyone that took part in the Club Championships and all the other events over the season and welcomed Graeme Watt onboard as vice captain for the upcoming season.
