Busy year in store for Co Sligo

Golf: Co Sligo to host Ladies Senior Home Internationals

It is going to be a big year for Co Sligo Golf Club which is celebrating its 125th anniversaries which began on New Year's Day with the ladies and men's Captains & Presidents' Drive In.

This year the prestigious West of Ireland Championships is taking place before Easter from April 4th to 7th while in May the Flogas Irish Amateur Open Championship is being held at the club from May 16th-19th.

This will see top amateurs from across Europe coming to Co Sligo to compete in what should be a fantastic event in terms of the calibre of competition and large crowds of supporters. Played annually from 1892 until 1959, with the exception of the War Years, and revived in 1995, the Irish Amateur Open has produced great champions including Joe Carr (three times), Jimmy Bruen, Tom Craddock, Padraig Harrington, Michael Hoey, Noel Fox and Louis Oosthuizen. In 2014, the event moved from three to four days, with 18 holes each day and a cut after three rounds.

The Fred Perry Trophy All-Ireland Finals are also taking place at the venue on September 26th and 27th. The Irish Ladies Golf Union released the fixtures for 2019 and Co Sligo is also the venue for the Ladies Senior Home Internationals from October 1st to 3rd.

There is also a 125th anniversary ball in the Radisson Blu hotel on April 20th.
