Bowls on the rise
A very enjoyable social evening was had by the Sligo Lawn Bowls club to celebrate their first event, the Winter League competitions and the club's first six months in existence.
Maureen Meehan, Club President said: "A special word of thanks to the wonderful spread put on by the ladies in the Presbyterian Hall. Fred Litherland with his music kept us all entertained and even brought all dancing enthusiasts to their feet skipping the light fantastic. We are very grateful to Albert Higgins, The Sligo Credit Union and The Riverside Hotel who very generously sponsored three Perpetual cups for our winter competitions. There was one for each of our categories - Triples, Pairs and Singles."
Outstanding matches were played with some matches having to play extra ends to decide a winner.
The Sligo Lawn Bowls club was launched in July 2017 and so much has been achieved in this short space of time. There is already 43 members in the club. Great interest is being shown in the Lawn Bowls Club, Maureen added. "Passers-by stop off to have a look and a chat and tell us that the only time they have seen it being played is on BBC Television - apart from seeing us - and are anxious to tell us how much they enjoy watching it. Come the Spring I can see our club growing in numbers adding to the already quality players we have at present.
"Our club was invited to play a friendly game with the Greenhills bowling club in Dublin during the Summer. Sixteen of us set out on the 9am train and had a day of fun, as well as playing a friendly but also a very competitive match, making our first trip away special and memorable.
"They are now looking forward to coming on a return visit and I know that our members will show them what a real Sligo welcome is like when the time comes.
"We would like to thank Lucy Brennan (Sligo County Council) and Diane Middleton Cox (Sligo Sports and Recreation Partnership) for all their help so far and who are continuing to work on our behalf."
The club will reopen on Tuesday 2nd January. "The Sligo Lawn Bowls committee wish all our bowlers a Very Happy New Year," Maureen added.
