The good times continue to roll for Sligo badminton. Following last weekend's National Intermediate Cup success, the club were crowned Intercounty (Grade E) Champions after defeating Tipperary and Meath.
The annual Intercounty Championships were held this weekend in NUIG's Kingfisher arena, Galway. Sligo got off to a convincing start as they defeated Tipperary 7-2. The momentum remained with the Sligo side as they overcame Meath 5-1 in the semi-finals.
Each match consists of 9 individual ties but as Sligo reached 5 points first the remaining ties became redundant and the match finished at 5-1.
Due to a 'back-door' like system Tipperary were to play themselves back into contention for the title as they defeated Cork and Wexford, subsequent to their own initial defeat to Sligo. So as fate would have it, Sligo was to face Tipperary again in the final.
In the final, Sligo's start was less convincing as Daniel Dolan and John Dolan came out second best in a very close 3 set match. Sligo dug deep in the remaining ties and won 5 in a row to win the title 5-1.
Rebecca McGillen and Siobhan Parker won their first ladies doubles match comfortably, as did Fionnuala Scanlon and Gemma Maguire in second ladies doubles.
Joey Bird and Brian Calliendo also had a task on their hands as their second men's doubles match went to a third set. The Sligo pair narrowly took this tie at 21-19 in the third set.
Fionnuala Scanlon took to the court again, this time in ladies singles. Fionnuala played well to win this match against a tough opponent. The first mixed doubles pair of Siobhan Parker and Brian Calliendo were to capture the all important fifth point for the Sligo team. This sealed the deal at 5-1 to Sligo.
The Sligo team was Paul Dolan, Brian Calliendo, Conor Caheny, Daniel Dolan, John Dolan, Joey Bird, Marie McTiernan, Gemma Maguire, Rebecca McGillen, Fionnuala Scanlon and Siobhan Parker.
