Organised by Western Gaels Club in memory of the late Donal Kirby
Last Friday evening saw the playing of the inaugural Donal Kirby Memorial Tournament for U19 hurling in Sligo.
The Tournament was organised by the Western Gaels Club in memory of the late Donal Kirby, a Limerick man who was the first Secretary of the club when it was formed in 1999.
The tournament was played at Enniscrone / Kilglass’ grounds at Quigabar and featured teams from Western Gaels, Naomh Eoin and Drumcliffe Rosses Point playing in a three way ‘blitz format.
In the round robin stage, there was a win for each team with Naomh Eoin defeating Western Gaels, 0-6 to 0-5, in the first game; Drumcliffe-Rosses Point beating Naomh Eoin, 2-6 to 1-3, in the second game and then Western Gaels overcoming Drumcliffe-Rosses Point, 0-8 to 1-1, in the third game.
With all three teams level, Western Gaels and play Drumcliffe-Rosses Point progressed to the final as they had the greater scoring difference.
In the end the home side prevailed by three points in the final 0-4 to 0-1 to conclude a very enjoyable evening of fast hurling
