Under 16s out of luck in Manning Shield final
Sligo U16 footballers failed to add the Manning Shield to the Ted Webb Shield losing the final 2-19 to 1-14 against Kildare at Pearse Park, Longford, on Wednesday night. Played in ideal conditions the scoreline did not reflect a match that ebbed and flowed from end to end with both teams playing an entertaining brand of football.
Kildare raced in to a 2-4 to 0-1 lead after 8 minutes. A minute later Sligo got a goal back when a great pass from a free was fielded bravely by Darren O'Hara and finished to the net. Both Teams traded points with Sligo scores from Finnian Cawley and Nathan Rooney. Sligo scored 4 unanswered points in a 4 minute spell with a Cawley long range effort the pick of the scores. Kildare scored another point before Cawley pointed again on the stroke of half-time to leave just a goal between the sides 2-8 to 1-8 at the break.
Sligo can out of the traps in the second half and hit 3 points to Kildare opening score to leave the minimum between the teams after 8 minutes. Kildare then kicked on again and added 4 points before Nathan Rooney scored for Sligo. Between the 20th and 26th minutes the teams traded points before Kildare added 4 more points to run out winners by 2-19 to 1-14.
