Holders exit after defeat to Easkey

Senior Hurling Championship at Ransboro Park: Coolera-Strandhill 1-7 Easkey 1-19

Frances Hanley

This match was played in near perfect conditions, except for a fairly strong across field breeze which favoured Coolera in the opening half.

Joe McHugh opened the scoring for Easkey with a free, this was followed by a point from Larry Cadden for Coolera.

Kevin Banks added a point to give his side the lead.

However two frees from Joe McHugh put Easkey one in front.

Coolera got three unanswered points and led 0-5 to 0-3.

Both teams had a number of wides in this half with Easkey having a total of twelve wides in this period as they struggled against the wind.

At half time, however the sides were level with six points each.

After the break Easkey began to stamp their authority on the game and got the first three points from play.

Eoin Comerford scored a '65 in the tenth minute but this would be his side's only score until injury time when Kieran Prior got a consolation goal in the dying moments of the game.

In the interim Easkey got some wonderful points from a number of players including two from corner back James Weir who had an excellent game in the back line.

Rory McHugh was superb as he swept away any danger from Coolera's attack.

Easkey's only goal came from substitute Finnian Cawley after a long range shot caused problems for Patrick O'Connor in the Coolera goalmouth. Coolera's Kevin Banks was excellent for his side and caused problems in the midfield area.

Easkey now face Calry/St Joseph's in the semi final of the championship on Friday night in Scarden. Coolera/Strandhill, last year's winners bow out of this year's championship following this defeat.
