WHEN it came to choosing the men's team colours at Co Sligo Golf Club, it was a straight forward black and white decision.

Teams have played in a variety of hues and colours in annual competitions against other clubs, so it was agreed Co Sligo would opt for definitive club colours for the men's teams.

And following on from the success of the Senior Cup team who wore black and white last year when winning the All-Ireland championship, the club's men's committee have selected black and white as the permanent colours. They are to be adopted as the season's colours in 2014 and approved as permanent colours by by-law next year.

The men's team colours are pictured here worn by golf club professionals Keith O'Neill and Jim Robinson. The club will be purchasing a pool of 24 sweaters with the club crest. These will be available to all team members playing in competitions - and returned afterwards. Team members will be asked also to wear white shirts and khaki trousers. More sweaters will become available in the club shop from Jim and through competition prizes. Teams will wear the club colours at all stages of competitions: from round one through, hopefully, to the final.

Padraig McMunn, Shane Underwood and Jim Flood deliberated on the colours at the request of the men's committee.

Club president Padraig said: "There should be pride in wearing the jersey and it's only right that we provide a jersey team players can be proud to wear. These are the county colours; these are the colours worn by our All-Ireland Seniors. Black and white are very close to the hearts of Sligo people. It makes us stand out."

Strandhill Lodge and Suites Winter League Final: The final day of the prestigious Strandhill Lodge & Suites Winter League took place on Sunday. A shot of morning frost overnight delayed the start by 20 minutes but as play got underway, the favourites were beginning to assemble and the clubhouse was a buzz with anticipation.

The 'B' final was a nine hole affair and Brian Henry and Kieran Egan were in sparkling form finishing 6up from Michael and Paul Cox who were 4up and Fergal Lynch and Ronan McCabe who finished third with 2up. At this stage the leaders started to hit home and the scores coming in from the course were staggering. Ronnie Conlon and Peter McDonnell had hoped for a little better but finished with 6up today and 12up overall. David Lyndsay and Donal Barry started the day 6up and were having a great tussle with playing partners Stephen English and Jimmy Kiernan.

After a great front nine they faded a bit on the latter holes and had to settle for a finishing score of 13up. Seamus and Robbie Henneberry started the day well down the field and felt no pressure whatsoever. With only their pride to play for, they blasted their way around and finished with a fantastic 10up on the day and a 13up aggregate to finish in third place. Another pair in sparkling form Stephen English and Jimmy Kiernan were also blasting their way around the course and only for too many shots dropped last week, they may have given the leaders a run for their money. 11up on the day catapulted them into second spot leaving Noel Tivnan and Gerry Kilbride a target of 16up to beat.

The two boys had their destiny in their own hands and calmly went about the business of finishing off the job from last week. They were 7up after nine holes but went off the boil a bit on the early holes on the back nine but rallied thereafter. Not knowing the leading score in the clubhouse, the boys walked off the 17th 18up and a magnificent 7 iron to 12 feet gave Tivvy the opportunity to savour the moment. The large crowd watched on as he set the ball in motion and it finished off stone dead. Another win and a finishing score of 19up. We never had a chance really. Many congratulations to Noel and Gerry and it was fitting that Gerry's parents were with him in the clubhouse later in the evening to see him collect his prize. Gerry tells me he won the winter league three times with his dad.

We are also delighted to be able to announce that Strandhill Lodge & Suites have agreed to sponsor the winter league once again next year. David McCoy, General Manager kindly gave us the news and we thank them for continuing their fantastic sponsorship of this prestigious competition.
