The local community of Bunninadden celebrates the official opening of a newly refurbished €150,000 Community Centre at 3pm on Sunday.

The honour of cutting the tape will go to former Bunninadden GAA Club player, Sean Wynne.

It was Sean's idea to build a Community Centre back in 1979.

The Centre opened for the first time in 1981.

Chairman Sean McDonagh said: "The Centre served its purpose ever since, but needed a facelift.

"We began the refurbishment project in January last year.

"The building was completely gutted.

"It re-opened in August, but on Sunday next we are having the official function. It will be a very, very special day for all involved."

The refurbishment project included an extension to the indoor playing area.

This resulted in the removal of the stage and the introduction of a new balcony and viewing area.

There's also a new maple floor, new heating system, toilets and disabled toilet, and a new fitted kitchen and meeting room.

The building has been re-wired and painted.

Firedoors and alarm systems have also been installed.

Sligo LEADER provided funding of €91,547 towards the overall cost.

The rest was raised through local fundraising efforts.

Tourlestrane builder Joe Kennedy & Sons completed the work.

The Chairman said: "The Centre now certainly is a focal point for the area.

"We have everything from basketball to volleyball to dancing.

"We have bowls for people with special needs on a Saturday.

"We also hold exercise for older people, the 'mature movers' during the day.

"It's great to see the building being used so much.

"The official opening will be the culmination of a lot of effort."
