Sligo Business Awards launched

The 7th annual Sligo Business Awards has been launched and nominations are now open.

The official launch was held in the Glasshouse Hotel last Thursday morning. The prestigious event is one of the most anticipated evenings in the business and social calendar. Following on from the huge success of the 2018 Sligo Business Awards, preparations for the 2019 event are now well under way.

The launch provided guests the opportunity to hear first-hand about the awards and to learn more about the importance behind these awards and the opportunity to celebrate and reward businesses from start-up level, to multi-nationals across the county for their hard work, innovation & dedication to the community and local economy in their respective fields.

The Radisson Blu Hotel & Spa will host the awards on Friday, 04 October when up to five hundred people are expected to gather together to celebrate all that is good about business in Sligo.

The launch was well attended with guests from all over the county and from all aspects of the political, business and community sectors.

General Manager, The Sligo Champion Lorraine McDonnell welcomed all the invited guests and the overall sponsor, Sligo LEADER Partnership together with all the associate sponsors and acknowledged the invaluable support from local businesses in running events like these.

"The Sligo Business Awards would not be possible without the endorsement of sponsor organisations that recognise the importance of these awards and the impactful role in our community"

The awards are run by The Sligo Champion in conjunction with Sligo LEADER Partnership and our associate category sponsors Callan Tansey Solicitors, AIB-Sligo, Brand Power, BOI-Sligo, IT Sligo, The Radisson Blu Hotel & Spa, David McConville Orthodontics, Joe Kelly Fresh Fruits, Burns Car Sales & Skoda, OSD, Yeats Tavern, Stephen Mullen-Sligo Haulage and Abbvie.

The Sligo Business Awards were created in 2013 in order to recognise the achievements of local businesses and reward them for their commitment to excellence and customer service. Seven years later the awards has grown exponentially year on year into what is now one of the most prestigious business events in the Country.

It is FREE to apply and is open to everybody who is in business. In most cases, businesses can apply themselves for a Category Award or they may nominate a business. The recipient of the 2019 Business of the Year Award will be chosen from the winners of each category. Judging will be carried out by an independent Panel of Judges. The Awards Ceremony, coupled with the presentation of the coveted 'Best Sligo Business Award 2019' is one of Sligo's most prestigious annual events. Applicants have until Friday September 06 to get their entries in.

General Manager, Lorraine McDonnell, The Sligo Champion says: "We were astounded at the level of the positive reaction to last year's Sligo Business Awards. The participation from businesses across the county was phenomenal, representing the range of skills and capabilities that exist in our region.

"The standard across all categories was extremely high and I think this was wonderfully represented by our shortlisted nominees and eventual award winners. Every single one of those is an outstanding ambassador for Sligo business. We look forward to continued collaboration with our partner Sligo LEADER, our sponsors, and even more businesses across the county to make the 2019 awards even stronger than before."

Executive Editor, Paul Deering, The Sligo Champion said the awards played a significant part in the life of the business community and award winners cherished being recognised.

Sligo LEADER Partnership CEO Chris Gonley said" We are once again delighted to be involved in the Sligo Business Awards. Without question, the awards reflect the business acumen, talent and calibre of the business community in this region. "The awards are about recognition, recognition of people and organisations that have made an exceptional contribution to their businesses and in turn to Sligo. The awards cover a range of sectors and areas and the nominations will be open for everyone in the county to have their say on who deserves to be recognised."

The 2018 overall winner was SL Controls: Its Managing Director, Keith Moran said: "Winning the award was really recognition of the work we have done, it's not only a recognition of our work in Sligo but it's a recognition of our work that we've done to promote Sligo all over the region and all over the country.

"It means a lot to our employees to see that their hard work is recognised. Especially as a proud Sligo man it's really good to get recognised by your own town and county.

"A lot of people say it's harder to be a success in your own town, I don't believe that. I think you can but I think to do that you have to put in the effort of promoting your town, you have to be behind your town. You can't just get recognition by throwing yourself out there, you have to support the region.

"I would 100% encourage businesses to enter the Sligo Business Awards. It's great publicity, it's great to get the word out there. It's great to encourage your staff, it's all positive. I would encourage people because some people say 'awards, I'm not into that it's a bit vain and there's a lot of vanity about that'.

"When we won that award it gave the company a great lift, not just in our Sligo office but across the country in our different offices. The guys were saying 'you won an award in Sligo, why aren't we going for these awards in Limerick and Galway?'. It's pushed us on," he said.
