Sportive was superb event
The SKODA Sligo Champion Cycling Sportive on April 5th last was one of the best organised cycling events I've ever been on.
I've done quite a few of these events but I have to say this was one of the nicest, best provisioned and friendliest of food stops:
lovely fresh ham and cheese sandwiches, biscuits, tea and coffee and water and oranges and bananas and very friendly and helpful volunteers.
And of course a warm sun, at the most opportune of times, emerging through the clouds did a lot to up the spirits.
And those high spirits didn't seem dented by the "Sligo 47kms" sign that greeted us as we turned back onto the N59, the main road back to Sligo.
Good surfaces, a wide and safe margin, together with plenty of sustenance, encouraged a bit of speed.
The pelotons opened up and competitors were strung out all along the, now completely dry, surfaces as the shapely outline of Knocknarea began to beckon us home.
And so it was back to Ballysodare and the sharp left turn over the bridge and a long solitary (for me anyway) pull back up to the finish and the Sligo Park.
On the way up from Ballysodare, successfully fighting that last long hill and seeing the computer click well over the magic "100", all made for a great sense of achievement as I passed under the finishing arch!
