Woman defrauded Social Welfare of €15k
A Tourlestrane woman who claimed she defrauded the Department of Social Welfare of almost €15,500 without realising it has been given the benefit of the Probation Act.
Caroline Owens of Gortermore, Tourlestrane, pleaded guilty before Judge Kevin Kilrane at Tubbercurry District Court last Wednesday 26th September, to failing to notify the Minister for Social Protection that her husband had received compensation which affected her entitlement to Job Seekers Allowance on 6th July 2016.
"This was a simple case where she did not realise she had committed fraud," solicitor Ms Valerie Kearns told the judge.
She said Owens had repaid the €15,446 in full and had no previous convictions.
Judge Kilrane said it was "a substantial matter given the amount of overpayment" but added that it was "not a case of outright robbery."
He applied the Probation Act.
