Will it be Stan, Noel, Seamus or Aoife driving you home?

Paul Deering

It's a stark message and one that has been used by the Road Safety Authority in the past. The Christmas/New Year period is one of the busiest times of the year for people to enjoy themselves but the message is still not being heeded to leave the car at home.

And, it order to hammer the message at home, Gardaí arranged for a photoshoot at the grounds of Sligo University Hospital over the festive period to ask the simple message, 'Who will be driving you home tonight' with the driver facing the stark choice between an ambulance, taxi, hearse or Garda car.

And, unfortunately many drivers are still not heeding the message. Between December 9th sand the 27th some ten drivers were arrested in the Sligo/Leitrim Division on suspicion of drunk driving. In 2018 there were three deaths on the roads in the Division. One of the arrests in Sligo occurred on Christmas night when Gardaí stopped a driver on the main Sligo to Dublin Road (N4) and after speaking with the driver he was arrested for drunk driving. He had a bottle of whiskey, opened, in the car with him! He subsequently gave a breath sample which he promptly failed with a concentration of 37 mgs of alcohol per 100 mls of breath.

Gardaí say the driver now faces a court prosecution where his reading, on conviction will result in a six month driving band along with whatever fine the court decides to impose. The message from Gardaí is simple, do not drink and drive. Every driver now faces a ban if over the limit.
