Traveller funding is not being spent
Sligo Traveller Support Group has express dismay at recently released figures which show that there was an almost 50% underspend nationally of the Traveller accommodation budget in 2018.
The figures show that that across the country only 6.2 million euro was drawn down by local authorities from an allocation of 12 million. Ten local authorities spent nothing at all on Traveller accommodation. Sligo County Council drew down €282,000 from an available allocation of over €1 million euro.
"There has been a consistent failure to meet the targets set or spend budgets with approximately 60 million unspent since 1998 said Jamie Murphy from the Sligo Traveller Support Group.
"In the middle of a homelessness and accommodation crisis this just isn't acceptable. Figure released last year by the Department of Housing showed that there has been a 66% increase in Travellers either living on the side of the road without basic living facilities or in overcrowded conditions.
"According to the ESRI while Travellers make up only 1% of the population, they account for almost 10% of those experiencing homelessness."
