Thieves cause €55k worth of damage to lodge
Vandals stole lead flashing off the Gate Lodge roof at Sligo Racecourse on Christmas Night.
Gardaí were alerted early on St Stephen's morning and are following a strong line of investigation into the vandalism.
It's the third time in twelve months that the same ridges on the Gate Lodge were stolen.
"It's very disheartening," said Chairman of County Sligo Races Don O'Connor. "The Gardaí believe they know who took it but it's a matter of getting the evidence now," he told The Sligo Champion.
"They took more this time than they took before. It's the lead ridging along the Gate Lodge which we spent €55,000 refurbishing," he said, adding that it was unlikely that they'd replace them with lead once again. "We'll have to find an alternative material. They wouldn't get a whole pile of money for the lead, maybe €100. We'd urge people to be aware. This is a facility used by the whole neighbourhood and we're a voluntary body," he said.
