SLIGO'S RICH heritage of arts and culture is to be showcased at a major American festival, at which a free trip to Sligo will be on offer.
Well known Mullaghmore author and folklorist, Joe McGowan has accepted an invitation from the co-ordinators of the 36th Annual Maryland Irish Festival and USA/Sligo based Wild West Irish Tours, to make Irish Cultural and Heritage presentations at the Maryland Irish Festival in November, at the Maryland Fair Grounds near Baltimore, Maryland. This 3 day event is one of the largest and longest running festivals in the US and benefits Irish Charities of Maryland.
Stacie Guerin, Vice President of the Festival said: "We are so excited to have Joe at the festival this year. We have been courting him and indeed Sligo for months now, and thanks to some great ambassador work by Michael Waugh and Trish Jenkins of Wild West Irish Tours, we will be able to welcome Joe with open arms at the festival. We look forward to experiencing his stories, humor and historical knowledge of his beloved Sligo."
Ms. Guerin confirmed that organisers wanted to showcase the writing, art, culture and history of County Sligo and the region at this year's festival and will be displaying work of other Sligo artisans, including works of Sligo Town based Woodcarver Michael Quirke and artist Poilin McGowan of Maugherow. As part of the festival, Wild West Irish Tours has donated a free trip to Sligo and the Northwest.
