Sligo finishes year 20th in litter table
Sligo finished in 20th place out of 40 towns surveyed for litter in 2017. And, the town leaped 11 places to finish so high.
Ennis was deemed the cleanest town in Ireland in the 2017 Anti-Litter League by Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL).
An Taisce conducts the surveys on behalf of IBAL.
The final survey of 2017 showed Sligo was once again Clean to European Norms coming 20th in the ranking of 40 towns and cities, up eleven places on the previous survey.
The Taisce report stated:
"Another excellent showing by Sligo, with one heavily littered site the only blemish.
"Some of the sites which scored very well in Sligo included Cartron Recreation Area/Seaview Drive Promenade, IT Sligo, The Model (Niland Centre) and residential area of Old Cartron Hill - these areas were not just clear of litter but very freshly presented and maintained. The one area which was seen as littered was the nearby shopping centre. "By far the most heavily littered site was Cartron Shopping Centre," stated the report.
Philip O'Brien, PRO Sligo Tidy Towns commented; "Obviously we're delighted with an increase of 11 places in 2017 and wish to thank our partners and volunteers for their support in achieving this increase.
"However we don't wish to become complacent and we would urge people to help us Keep Sligo Beautiful and keep an eye on the litter around their business premises or neighbourhood".
