Romantic break ends in tragedy
The circumstances surrounding the death of a young County Meath man following a fall at a Sligo hotel are still being probed by Gardai.
However, Gardai are satisfied it was a tragic accident that claimed the life of Cathal Reilly (28).
He was staying at the Sligo City Hotel on Quay Street with his girlfriend Sinead Clinton on a Valentine's break.
The couple had left the hotel around 11pm to socialise on the town last Wednesday; the tragic accident happened on their return some time around 1.45 am.
The Sligo Champion understands Mr Reilly had gone up an alleyway at the side of the hotel after initially ringing the bell at the front door.
He was apparently checking to see if there was another entrance to the hotel.
There's a low wall at the end of the alley leading to a car park below.
Mr Reilly, a native of Virginia and living in Oldcastle, apparently then fell from a height of between 12 and 15 feet
A night porter was on duty and he opened the door to Ms Clinton (27) who had waited at the front.
They both discovered the injured Mr Reilly.
An ambulance was contacted and a crew subsequently performed CPR on Mr Reilly.
Ambulance control also informed Gardai of the incident.
Mr Reilly, who had serious head injuries, was rushed to Sligo Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead at around 2.35am.
Ms Clinton was also treated for a minor injury to her ankle that was sustained after the fall of Mr Reilly.
The couple were on a two day stay in Sligo.
Ms Clinton, a beauty therapist, who works at the Radisson Blu Farnham Estate Hotel in Cavan is "completely distraught."
On her Facebook page she paid a tribute to her partner.
She described him as "the best lookin man in meath, and he was mine."
The hotel was closed for a short time on Thursday as Gardai carried out their investigation.
A spokesman for the hotel said it would not be making any comment on the incident.
Staff were also traumatised by the incident.
A post mortem examination has been carried out and an inquest into Mr Reilly's death will be held later.
He is the only son of Gerard and Margaret Reilly and is also survived by his sisters Grace, Helena, Lorna and Jessica.
His funeral and burial took place last Saturday.
