Universities from all over Ireland are sending representatives to a major new careers fair in Sligo this week.

Guidance Counsellors from the Sligo branch of the North West Institute of Guidance Counsellors have organised the inaugural Careers Fair at IT Sligo this Thursday, May 11th.

It will run from 9:30am until 3pm. Their message to students is that the West of Ireland is "open for business" and there are good employment opportunities close to home for students after school or college.

Exhibitors from the higher education sector, industry, state organisations and the voluntary sector will attend.

The event hopes to provide a platform locally for students from the region to meet with colleges, training bodies, and local businesses.

They will also experience visiting a third level institution and have the opportunity to attend brief lectures/talks.

"This is a unique opportunity for students in the region to meet with successful employers and find out about employment opportunities," said one of the organisers and Guidance Counsellor at Summerhill College, Maria Taylor.

"This will be supported with information provided by a wide selection of third level institutions," she added.

It's a non-profit event which they hope will become firmly established on school calendars on an annual basis.

All parents are welcome to attend and can purchase tickets on the website: www.northwestcareerfest.com.

There will be talks by health professionals from the key areas of physiotherapy on the day who will provide practical knowledge and experience about these areas of employment.

Other areas to be covered on the day include Science, IT, Agriculture, Law and Business, Engineering, Business Entrepreneurs and Food and Hospitality.

Local entrepreneurs and representatives from various financial institutions will be present to speak and advise about employment opportunities in these key areas.

Students can listen all about the various areas of employment in the legal sector from long standing professionals.
